NO.: Betaine is only used for patients with homocysteinuria (a genetic metabolic defect) and occasionally xerostomia (inability to produce saliva) or fatty liver disease. Betaine can cause nausea, diarrhea, body odor, and severe GI distress. If your child is having digestive issues, please see her doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.

Why should I get choline and betaine in my diet during pregnancy?

Methylation: Choline is synthesized from methonine and serine and is also present in the diet. It is the precursor of acetylcholine, phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, platelet activating factor, and sphingosylphosphorylcholine. It functions as a methyl group donor, and is a precursor for betaine, which is also a methyl group donor. Methylation is a critical function.

Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Emotional conflict: We run to infants when they cry & do anything to sooth them, which sets them up to treat us like servants. As the approach 2 they expect us to stay close by but don't want us to interfere with their play.We begin to leave them to their toys (to get stuff done) & they fuss when we don't stay. They fear separation but want control.Be patient and help them understand you are nearby & they can play alone.

Why is my 2 year old daughters stool always a shade of green? I rarely give her juice or food coloring so it cannot be the dye...

Normal!: It is not uncommon in some children. If the stool is formed , child is growing i would not worry about it. It is often from green leafy vegetables, coloring agents in the food or simply due to rapid transit from small intestine to large intestine where it normally is tuned brown.
