Yes: Viral infections can change the color of the mucus and can cause chest pain. Usually viral infections will peak by day 5 of an infection. If symptoms are not getting better by that time or if coughing is to the point where sleep is effected then a doctors visit may well be indicated. If a bronchodilator is not helping then it may also make sense to contact your physician.
