2% or less: In a normal two year old we recommend 2% or less milk. There are many medical reasons why we may recommend higher fat contents, though.

Whatever they like: The dietary recommendations that emerged 3-4 decades ago advising us to go low fat has been refuted by recent studies. The move to low fat and sugar free has been followed by a significant increase in health problems in the US. Keep your eyes and ears open over the next few years as the move back to regular sweeteners, milk, eggs, and meats is now back in favor.

2% or whole: If your 2 yr old is nice and "soft", you can opt for 2%. If he is very thin, stick with whole milk. I don't recommend fat free milk for children under 5, as they need fat in their diet to absorb vitamins and grow properly. But make sure they are getting plenty of GOOD fat in foods (fish, avocado, olive oil) and other healthy foods before they load up on milk and get full!
