Lifestyle and diet: Factors that cause irritation of your esophagus and increase your risk of esophageal cancer include (some are modifiable): barrett's esophagus (precancerous change) gerd bile reflux alcohol abuse; chewing tobacco; smoking achalasia (esophageal sphincter inability to relax) drinking very hot liquids;eating few fruits;vegetables; eating foods preserved in lye obesity prior chest radiation.
