Stays in bladder: With urinary retention, the bladder is not able to be emptied. This causes the bladder to enlarge and distend, resulting in pain and discomfort. In severe cases, your kidneys can lose function because the urine made in the kidneys then can't leave the body. In men, the most common cause is an enlarged prostate. Loss of bladder contractility is another cause. See a urologist.
