It is NOT: Herpes simplex virus is dormant most of the time inside a nerve cell (ganglion). At variable intervals it travels down the nerve to be expressed at the skin surface. Thymidine kinase generated by any inflammatory response signals the virus to replicate and cause a blistered spot where the nerve reaches the skin. Inflammatory response may be a fever, abrasion, scratch, or sunburn.
