Toxic shock: TSS or 'Toxic shock syndrome' is caused by bacteria that have a certain toxin. Often it is either Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Strep) or Staphylococcus aureus. If your mom was afflicted by this, I would want to know more about the circumstances of her illness. For the most part, I would not be worried about you catching it. But it's good to talk to an ID doc or someone who would know.
