Not normal: Suggest consult with a nutritionist. Needs to be on an appropriate diet. Also seek out a local cholesterol expert, your child may need a cholesterol lowering medication sooner rather than later, but, only if cholesterol cannot be controlled by diet. Good luck.

HYPERLIPIDEMIA: High cholesterol among children are treated by low fat diet alone. We don't give medication for fear of affecting the liver. The family have to be on diet so the kid will not eat the high cholesterol food at home.

It happens: There are subgroups of the population with an inherited abnormality in cholesterol/lipid metabolism. These are often found now in their teens through screening. Treatment approach varies & must be individualized to the patients situation.
