A member asked:

Docs, could a human survive without the ileum?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Many do!: The function of the ileum is mainly to absorb vitamin B12 & bile salts as well as whatever products of digestion were not absorbed by the jejunum. Some of the function of a missing or shortened ileum can be accommodated, & some supplemented.
