Mostly asymptomatic: ~75% of patients infected with WNV are asymptomatic and ~20% have self-limiting symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. Less than 1% of patients go on to develop encephalitis or meningitis, which require hospitalization. Many factors influence whether the virus penetrates the central nervous system.
