No: If you have a completely non-displaced fracture you could be treated in a splint.

Thumb or wrist: Injuries do not all need to be casted some are treated with a removable splint for a part-time spot and depending upon the degree of injury the age of the injury the age of the patient the stability of the fracture and other factors that come into play. And orthopedic surgeon or hand surgeon spend years figuring out what to treat and how to do it
