Do you know if there are other dental treatments that do the job of a porcelain overlay but are less expensive?

Not really: Composite veneers do not "do the job" of a laboratory fabricated restoration, which is stronger, more esthetic, does not stain, and lasts longer. Yes, chairside sculpted restorations are less expensive but they are not the same. You get what you pay for.
