A member asked:

I had a hysterectomy in 2009 my doctor did not take my ovaries, she said i don't need any pelvic exams any longer, its always bothered me. do i?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: A woman who has had a hysterectomy for totally benign causes, without evidence of precancerous conditions of cervix no longer needs pap smears. However, bimanual pelvic exams are warranted to evaluate presence of ovarian disease. Ultrasound is valuable in detection as well, but not a routine screening tool.
