Life time: Our ankles are finicky healers. Many of us after an ankle sprain or any type of surgery on a leg (varicose vein removal/ knee replacemt. Etc) will have compromised blood flow in that leg at the ankle. That ankle will likely always be more sensitive to swelling (or edema) and have slower wound healing than the nonaffected ankle. The only things you can do are wear support stockings and elevate.
