Motion capacity: Passive motion refers to the range of motion the spine is capable of when induced by out side forces. Active motion is what it can do when your own muscles are activated. Injury or spasm of muscles can reduce both active rom and passive rom.

Assisted: Active range of motion refers to when you use your ownuscles to move the area. Passive range of option is when someone else moves it. So, for example, if you tear your rotator cuff muscle in your shoulder, you may not be able to move it yourself (active) but someone else will be able to move it ( passive); but in a frozen shoulder neither you or someone else will be able to move it.
