I can move my thumb from its socket to about a 90 degree angle, pain free. it's not really interfering but it throbs. i can't do the same elsewhere?

Ligament injury: If you do not have natural laxity in other joints, your complaints likely represent a ligament injury and instability. Recurrent dislocations or instability can lead to other problems like arthritis which means……time to get it checked by a hand specialist. In downer's grove you can go to m;m orthopaedics or hinsdale orthopaedics.

Instability: Sounds like repetitive injuries to the joint of the thumb that has lead to instability. You need to see an orthopaedic hand surgeon to be evaluated for repair. You are young and to ignore this will lead to painful arthritis in the future.
