It all depends on...: It can last for a long time if untreated. Mri study helps understand exact anatomy (nerve root compression or just irritation) long lasting pain, as well as pain radiation below the knee, indicate more severe problem. Always watch for weakness in the leg or foot; if untreated, it can be irreversible.
