A member asked:

My tsh was high but my t4 was normal but they still put me on synthroid (thyroxine). why would they do this if the problem is my tsh not my t4?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hypothyroidism: T4 and t3 are the thyroid hormones that do all the work. Tsh is the pituitary hormone that controls the thyroid. If the TSH is high, it means the T4 and t3 are falling, and the thyroid is failing. It may not have completely failed yet, but it probably will, which is probably why your docs started synthroid (thyroxine).
