See your family doc: He probably will order xrays to determine the cause. He may send you to a pain clinic for further evaluation.

Leg pain: Shooting pain in the leg may be from a pinched nerve. A nerve may be pinched at the spine level from a herniated disc. You should get an MRI for proper evaluation and see a pain physician for conservative treatment first. If not helpful you may require a surgical intervention.
