Relatives/Foster car: The children of a hospitalized parent (single, psychiatric or otherwise) would likely be cared for first by relatives.Children's services office of the state would likely be involved to monitor that situation & arrange temporary foster care if it should become necessary.Social workers on staff of most residential facilities/hospitals do this stuff routinely.

Psych Hospital: If the mother is admitted in a psychiatric hospital for danger to self or others, it will be determined by the treatment team is she is a danger to herself or baby or is she able to care for self or the baby the treatment team will determine clinically and legally whats the safest for mother and child.
