Mother was admitted to hospital with chest pains. she had low levels troponin and is over weight and 70yrs old. is it cause for concern?

There are multiple reasons for chest pain.It is reassuring from a heart standpoint that her initial troponin levels were low- typically troponin will be released when there is damage to the heart. However, she still will need to be worked up and it may be that she is still at risk for heart attack so they need to followup with other tests and to exclude non cardiac causes.

The negative troponins tell you there there was no heart muscle damage only. The symptoms could still be from unstable coronary disease. If her symptoms are highly suspicious, a cardiac catheterization &coronary angiography may be done If she does not appear unstable, a limited treadmill stress test may be performed & if negative she may be discharged & have a maximal test as an outpatient
