A member asked:

Elderly diabetic black man taken in the emergency room with a swollen left leg. how do docs get the swelling down?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends on the cause: The 2 most dangerous reasons for swelling in this patient are an infection and a blood clot. If it is infection then he will need to be on antibiotics. If it is severe enough he will need to stay in the hospital on IV antibiotics. If it is a blood clot (which could be found with an ultrasound) then the treatment is blood thinners for at least 6 months. The swelling will go down slowly.
