A member asked:

I have a 2.8cm ovarian cyst. i have the brca1 mutated gene. my ca125 blood test came back normal. could it still be early stage of ovarian cancer?

Rare: Ovarian cysts are of concern when over 5 cm. If the small cyst is not complex it is usually followed by ultrasound. Ca 125 has no diagnostic implication but is only of value for monitoring. Brca1 suggests the cyts should be followed.

Should seek Genetic: Genetic counseling is advised unless already done. Ca125 is not entirely reliable and a normal value does not exclude early ovarian cancer.. So you should either monitor the cystic lesion closely( imaging studies every 4-6 monthly) or consider removal of your ovaries if you have already completed your family. Good luck.
