Surgery=last resort: In most cases of any health condition, surgery is a last resort. First line treatment is always prevention. Next is palliative measures (change diet, cleanse wounds, rest/ice/compress/elevate injuries). Drug intervention is next. Surgery is last because of the inherent risks of complications afterward. You need to follow those steps to assure least number of complications.
