Up to 85% success: Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that can not be cured, but can be stabilized and maintained. Studies have shown up to 85% success rate and that surgery is a good treatment option for patients with deep pockets. Success rates vary and are dependent on which factors have contributed to your gum disease. Post surgery maintenance is the key to success.

Different procedures: If periodontal surgery was necessary, it was due to gum disease involving periodontal pockets that would have been pretty deep. However, the prognosis of keeping the tooth should have been good enough to proceed with this surgery. As far as the success of the surgery for the purpose of treating gum disease, most are successful providing proper home hygiene is followed with timely return visits.
