Ice then immobilize: Foot sprains usually respond best to ice compresses for 20 minutes every hour for the 1st 24 hours after the injury. Thereafter, it is best to immobilize the foot or ankle with an ace bandage that you can purchase at a drug store. Be aware that the pain from sprains usually lasts for 10-14 days!

See below: Relative rest, ankle stabilization with a brace, elevation to help with the swelling, ice to help with the pain and swelling, and oral anti-inflammatories. Keep in mind that some sprains can actually involve an avulsion fracture of an ankle or foot bone. A visit to a sports medicine physician (family med, orthopedist, etc) is best. X-rays will likely be performed.

Foot sprains: need medical treatment with casting or immobilization. Some even need surgical intervention depending on what ligament was injured. Most importantly, patients need to elevate their affected foot, keep ice on throughout the day and stay off of it for proper healing to occur. Pain and anti-inflammatory medications can be recommended and prescribed by your doctor if needed.
