A member asked:

Could clearing sore throat permanently damages your vocal cords?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Clearing of the throat by habit or a feeling of mucus or reflux of acid can permanently damage the surface of the true vocal folds. When you continuously clear your throat you are essentially banging the vocal folds against each other. Eventually you may develop a vocal fold nodule, ulcer, bleed into the fold. You need to find out why you are clearing your throat so often.
