Depends.: It depends on the surgeon and the approach chosen by the surgeon. Some surgeons only do a minimal shave, others take off more hair.

What does the pineal gland do and how big can a cyst on it get before surgury is needed?

Pineal cyst: The pineal gland produces melatonin (which helps regulate sleep/wake cycles). Many pineal cysts are found incidentally. The ones that need treatment are usually the ones that cause symptoms (hydrocephalus). Some doctors would elect to follow asymptomatic cysts >10mm w/ serial imaging while others would just follow clinically. It really depends on the surgeon.

Shave head.: May want to go to a barber who does shaves. They will usually do it at hospital tho. May not need to shave entire head. discuss with your team.
