When one does things: using muscles beyond their ability to use force, the muscle can change its metabolism. this can cause immediate soreness. The muscle is fatigued. When one has later or delayed soreness the next day it is because of some trauma to the muscle cells as you exceed their capacity. The good news is that if you do this just right, the muscle gets better at handling both situations... endurance/strength
