Matter of comfort: It depends on the surgeon who is placing the implants and your desires. If you are more comfortable with being sedated then you can most likely request that. It will probably add some cost to the procedure. I have sat in and watched an implant being place with the patient having only local anesthetic and she was just fine. Your dentist/oral surgeon will discuss your choices with you.

No: Even my crazy sister did it under local anesthesia. While i don't place the implant body myself, i restore them. None of my patients were sedated with IV medications by the surgeons who place the implants for me.

Dental implants & IV: Most people having a dental implant placed will choose intravenous anesthesia. A patient may choose intravenous anesthesia for simple procedures depending on their level of anxiety and comfort.

Differs: Many patients have only local anesthesia for a few implants. We do full arch implants with local, but most patients prefer I.V. sedation for the more lengthy and involved procedures. If you are fine with local for your regular dental treatment and your Surgeon is skilled and responsive to your level of comfort, you should be fine. Many patients report it being easier than a filling! Good Luck.

No: Local anesthesia ( like the one to do a filling) is good enough

Local: For the placement of just 1 or 2 implants, local anesthesia is usually sufficient. If you are apprehensive, or if many implants are being placed simultaneously, intravenous anesthesia may be a better choice. Discuss pros & cons with your surgeon.
