Disease progression.: Barium is an inert compound given during certain xray exams to better visualize bowel. Pain after a ct scan is much more likely due to progression of existing disease rather than complication of the scan. Diverticulitis, appendicitis, small bowel diseases, can all be better seen when barium is given during a ct scan. Greater pain may indicate disease progression or treatment complication.
