A member asked:

Some podiatrists claim next day walking and little pain after bunion surgery, but it seems most people experience lots of pain and given 6 wk recovery times. does this depend on how bad the bunion is?

Bone pain: Pain is a subjective experience and the walking is more dependent on the extent of the surgery and the patient's individual tolerance to pain.

A lot depends...: On the severity of the bunion, the procedure performed and the doctor preforming it! almost all of my patients walk the same day as the surgery. I am also shocked that many say they have little to no pain. Most spend 5 to 6 weeks in a surgical shoe, then back to regular shoes as tolerated. Having sais all this, there are some bunion procedures where you do have to remain non-weightbearing...
