Viral illness: Most often viruses cause symptoms as you describe. Given the high pitched, barky cough, i suggest you take her in for evaluation immediately.

Home care ok: A barky cough sometimes indicates croup, a viral infection of the epiglottis that causes a distinctive seal cough. Croup is mostly harmless unless your son has difficulty breathing or becomes short of breath with coughing. Most children with croup are between the ages of 2-9 but older children can be affected. Treatment is usually with home care, fluids, rest, and cool mist humidification.
