Basic answer: Image enters pupil, focused by lens, incites chemical reaction in rods and cone, created electrical nerve impulses through complex network, nerve message sent through optic nerve, tract and radiations to visul cortex part of brain (occipital), impulses decoded , sent to cortical area for evaluation.
