A member asked:

What are normal tooth filling made of and how long do they usually last?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Several types: The basic filling materials are silver, resin, ceramic and gold. Silver(amalgam) fillings are a silver alloy mixed with mercury. They are inexpensive and long lasting(over 20 years). Resin (plastic) fillings are bonded to tooth and can last over 10 years. They are white and popular. The ceramic and gold fillings made outside of mouth then cemented in place are more expensive but long lasting.
