A member asked:

Could you tell me what is the protocol for a psychiatrist when dealing with a schizoaffective parent?

Dr. Anthony Vita answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

No set protocol: Schizoaffective disorder is a chronic mental illness where both psychosis (breaks from reality, delusions, hallucinations) and mood symptoms are prominent. Treatment is antipsychotic medications for psychotic symptoms and mood stabilizers or antidepressants for mood symptoms. Sometimes only one agent is needed. The choice of one agent over another is based on which symptoms are more prominent.
