Don't do it: In addition to the risks of permanent nerve damage and infection from the piercing procedure people with tongue piercings also run a high chance of fracturing teeth from accidentally biting on the tongue bar.

Bleeding: and secondary infection are the most common early or immediate complication of tongue piercing. The most fatal complication of tongue piercing can be death (very rae).

Tongue Piercings: According to the British Dental Association the potential for infection is higher for the tongue than any other location on the body. Swelling of the tongue can compromise the airway. Ludwig's Syndrome (Ludwig's Angina) can cause swelling & sepsis both of which can lead to death. Staphylococcus aureus / Streptococcus pyogenes can enter tissues through the piercing & lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome.
