Not too deadly: Tongue piercings are not deadly if performed correctly and by experienced individuals. Hygiene is still important, so the area needs to be maintained and cleaned. However, the fixtures in the piercing have been known to be the cause of injuries and damage to teeth.

Deaths have occurred: According to the British Dental Association the potential for infection is higher for the tongue than any other location on the body. Swelling of the tongue can compromise the airway. Ludwig's Syndrome (Ludwig's Angina) can cause swelling & sepsis both of which can lead to death. Staphylococcus aureus / Streptococcus pyogenes can enter tissues through the piercing & lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome.
