Chronic pancreatitis: CP is often diagnosed by testing pancreatic structure and function. Pancreatic biopsy is dangerous. Amylase and lipase may be elevated and secretin stimulation test is the best functional test but not often used clinically. Bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) production is impaired early in CP (95% sensitivity). Faecal elastase in stool, serum trypsinogen, ct, ultrasound, eus, mri, ERCP and mrcp.

Best way: Early chronic pancreatitis is difficult to diagnose since structural changes detected by ct, mrcp, or other imaging tests are not present in the early stages. Ercp or testing the secretions of the maximally stimulated pancreas are the most sensitive way to detect early cp. Recurrent bouts of pancreatitis, development of diabetes and reduced pancreatic function, though are the most relevant signs.
