A member asked:

My daughter, age 9, has premature adrenarche since age 5. hormones/bone xray, tsh, labs normal. now she developed alopecia areata. is it pcos?

Not PCOS: Alopecia is not related to pcos or to premature puberty. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder. I assume she is cared for by a pediatric endocrinologist. She may also need a dermatologist.

PCOS: There appears to be a casual relationship between alopecia areata, premature adrenarche and pcos. I do hope your child is under the care of a pediatric endocrinologist at a teaching institution. Dermatological consultant will also be needed.
