Altered mental statu: There are many causes of altered mental status. In your uncle's case it can be due to electrolyte imbalances from his kidney disease, uremia (high nitrogen in the blood) or caused by infection (sepsis). At this point, there is not enough information to point to a cause but this is not uncommon. His kidney doctor should continue to monitor his electrolytes and antibiotics should be initiated.
