Barrier method-Condom: Some people who've had herpes in the past, can still remain asymptomatic, and can pass this onto their partner. You need to have him checked for stds, and herpes status. If he has active outbreaks, you'll need to refrain from sex. Otherwise you will be at high risk for contracting it. Also make sure he uses condoms. He can be in remission status.

Use condoms: They are not 100% but do help decrease your risk, your partner could be put in a prophylactic daily dose of Acyclovir or Valtrex (valacyclovir) to reduce viral shedding and risk of spreading it to you.
