Seat belt syndrome: A kid that graduates too soon to a seat belt is at tremendous risk of paraplegia in a frontal impact crash. As the body is thrown forward, the belt slides up over the pelvis and compressed the abdominal contents. The shock wave travels back to the spinal cord and bends the vertebrae, often cracking them. The result can include rupture of abdominal organs, immediate paraplegia and a broken back.
