Kidney disease: Diabetes, especially if not controlled, will negatively affect kidney function, notably with respect to that organ's vital function in stimulating blood cell production. The kidneys do so by secreting a hormone that leads to red cell production.

Only kidney disease: So if anemic, likely not related to diabetes look for other cause! see md.
