Encephalopathy: Encephalopathy is a general term to refer to an injury to the brain, by trauma, infection, anoxia, bleeding among other causes. In short the brain has been injured by any of the above mechanisns, there are others but these are the most common.

It could be caused by infection, lack of oxygen or other event. Most often the term is paired with its suspected cause such as "lead encephalopathy".
