No need surgery: If he is asymptomatic and young, he should do fine with lithotripsy. However, he may re-form gall stones in the future.

Discuss with Surgeon: That seems reasonable without any symptoms. The stones may not be near the duct, etc. Ask the surgeon and discuss all your options and if what you desire does not work, then surgery, may be done laproscopically (much less invasive) which is elective, and would be an acceptable course of action for you.
