Not likely cancer: It came on too fast, and cancer is rarely painful to start off with. See doctor to determine if its tender lymph nodes, muscle strain, or pain along carotid artery (carotidynia).

Unlikely: Lymphoma usually doesn't hurt. What you describe is not very specific but it could be an infectious origin. Trauma is also possible. The only way to tell for sure is to see your physician for a clinical examination.
