Yes: Technically alcoholic is not a medical term. There are various alcohol use disorders such as alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse, there are even recommended daily and weekly drinking limits, there are limitations to all of these definitions. People in the rooms of aa may have any of the above and self identify as an alcoholic. For whatever reason alcohol just was not working for them anymore.
