A member asked:

How long does it take to get addicted to alcohol, does it take a while to become an alcoholic or are you addicted right away?

Alcohol addicition: You will not become addicted right away but if you inherit a certain genetic structure you may be prone to alcoholism. If your tolerance is high that is not a good sign. If you have alcoholism in your family of origin that is also a factor that should make you very careful with alcohol consumption. Best wishes.

Alcohol addiction: I've had some patients who knew alcohol was "their" drug right away -- from their very first drink. At least initially they felt it altered their lives and experience by relieving painful anxieties. They could go from shy and retiring to being the life of the party, by using alcohol. For such people, using alcohol within limits was impossible. Not everyone responds in this way, though.
