Can lactose intolerance cause malabsorption in other vitamins, minerals and nutrients?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Thomas Namey
47 years experience in Rheumatology
Usually not!: Diarrhea is not a common problem with lactose intolerance, but does occur. It is conceivable that micronutrients such as zinc may not be absorbed. This is rare. More commonly, bloating, gas, and cramping occur. Is would be very unusual to have malnutrition secondary to lactose intolerance.
